On February 28, the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran, resulting in the deaths of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei and senior Iranian leaders and military officials. Iran has retaliated with attacks on nearby US military bases and the energy infrastructure of regional allies, while also halting oil and gas shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, all of which has inflamed tensions throughout the Middle East. While the strategic objectives and end-goal of the US and Israeli operation remain unclear, short and medium-term geopolitical impacts and implications for energy markets are sure to be felt throughout the global economy.
The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia University SIPA hosted a rapid response webinar on the latest developments, their evolving impacts on oil and gas markets, and the potential paths ahead for the nation, the region, and the world.
