#ClimateWeek2019 at CGEP

On Monday, September 23, the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit began in New York City, bringing leaders in government, industry, and technology to discuss their plans to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions to reach the Paris Agreement goal of net zero emissions by 2050. This meeting kicked-off Climate Week NYC, an annual city-wide series of events and talks to showcase climate success stories and discuss how to do more.

At the Center on Global Energy Policy, our scholars hosted and attended #ClimateWeek events, released new research, and participated in Columbia University’s wider Climate Week efforts across campus.

The US doesn’t have a climate policy now — until Washington is back at the global table, world environmental progress will be slow: Noah Kaufman

Economist Noah Kaufman discusses the complexities of America's energy transition, highlighting the decline of coal despite federal rhetoric. He emphasizes the need to address the economic vulnerabilities of fossil fuel-dependent communities, particularly oil and gas regions often overlooked in climate policies. Kaufman also warns that potential tariffs and US disengagement from global climate agreements could hinder progress.

Energy and Climate Issues During the Trump Administration’s First 100 Days

President Donald Trump has made energy a clear focus for his second term in the White House. Having campaigned on an “America First” platform that highlighted domestic fossil-fuel growth, the reversal of climate policies and clean energy incentives advanced by the Biden administration, and substantial tariffs on key US trading partners, he declared an “energy emergency” on his first day in office.
