In 2017, China was the world’s leading emitter of heat-trapping gases by a wide margin. Its policies for limiting emissions will have a significant impact on the global climate for decades to come. Please join the Center on Global Energy Policy for the New York book release of CGEP Inaugural Fellow David Sandalow’s Guide to Chinese Climate Policy. The Guide provides background on Chinese emissions, the impacts of climate change in China and the history of China’s climate policies. The bulk of the Guide discusses China’s climate policies, explaining the principal tools the Chinese government uses to address climate change. A conclusion provides an assessment of those policies. The Guide to Chinese Climate Policy is a “living document,” which will be updated regularly. Prof. Sandalow will provide an overview of the material in the Guide, after which the following experts will join him for a panel discussion on Chinese climate policy and related topics: Ailun Yang, Program Officer, Environment Team, Bloomberg Philanthropies Tom Christensen, Professor of Public and International Affairs and Director of the China and the World Program at Columbia University Steve Cohen, Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs and Director of the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management, Earth Institute Registration is required. Guests unable to attend can view a livestream of the event at https://energypolicy.columbia.edu/livestream. President Donald Trump has made energy a clear focus for his second term in the White House. Having campaigned on an “America First” platform that highlighted domestic fossil-fuel growth, the reversal of climate policies and clean energy incentives advanced by the Biden administration, and substantial tariffs on key US trading partners, he declared an “energy emergency” on his first day in office.
While he hasn’t released an official plan, Trump’s playbook the last time he was in office and his frequent complaints about clean energy offer clues to what’s ahead.
