9:00 am - 10:30 am

Climate change is already impacting the health of people around the world. At the heart of the challenge—and its solution—is the energy system, which currently produces not only the majority of human-produced greenhouse gas emissions but also the vast majority of key air pollutants that harm the health of communities around the world. While these health impacts are felt by everyone, the burden is not evenly shared, with poor and marginalized communities often experiencing a disproportionate share of these ill effects. The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA will host a discussion on understanding the impacts of climate change and air pollution on our health as well as how the energy transition can help to protect and improve human health moving forward. Moderator: — Dr. Melissa Lott, Senior Research Scholar and Lead of the Power Sector and Renewables Research Initiative, Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy Speakers: — Dr. Daniel Kammen, Professor of Energy, University of California, Berkeley and Former Science Envoy, US Department of State — Dr. Maria Neira, Director, Public Health, Environment, and Social Detriments of Health Department (PHE), World Health Organisation — Dr. Nick Watts, Executive Director, The Lancet Countdown — This webinar will be hosted via Zoom. Advance registration is required. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email with access details. The event will be recorded and the video recording will be added to our website following the event. This event is open to press, and registration is required to attend. For media inquiries or requests for interviews, please contact Artealia Gilliard ([email protected]) or Genna Morton ([email protected]).
