On an island off the western coast of Australia sits a mammoth industrial facility built to produce and export liquefied natural gas.
The distance from the ocean’s surface to the bottom of one gas reservoir is five times the height of the world’s tallest building. The amount of steel pipeline used would be enough to stretch from the District of Columbia to New York City and back. And each of the refrigerated tankers that carry the liquefied natural gas to foreign markets is big enough to hold the equivalent of 72 Olympic-size swimming pools.
